Alfred Hitchcock couldn't have written it better. What thriller this game was! Well done to the boys in red to come back from a 0-2 against a tough Japan.
It's too early to go home, and so it was for the dozen or so Belgian fans at the Castle Hotel this morning. After a great rollercoaster of a game, the Belgians took home the bacon!
Speaking of bacon, the Castle Hotel put on a great breakfast line-up that has sure satisfied the hungry Belgian fans. We'll do it again in a few days time against the multi World Cup winners, Brazil. More info to follow, stay tuned...
Belgium - Japan (Tuesday morning 3/07 at 4am)
YES ! Our beloved Red Devils have made it to the final 16 at the World Cup Soccer in Russia !
Again they call upon us for full support to get them past Japan, all the way to the quarter finals !
We know it`s an early rise, but nothing beats watching this game on super large screen at The Castle Hotel together with the Belgian Party Crew which you undoubtedly remember from the BEL-TUN match last weekend.
Again we will be offered the full Belgian beer range (incl. super deal on Palm), but Stephen will be happy to get his best barrista in preparing us some great coffees. That could easily be aKompanied with brekkie ranging from Croque Monsieur, fries, wedges, frikandellen and with a decent crowd we might be able to pursuade him to make pancakes or waffles ! For the occasion, we even made a new dish called "Toast Batshuayi"! Come over to the Castle to find out what it is!
So let`s all join together for this early one, as we all look forward entertaining you for an even bigger party the following weekend !!
Belgium in the Quarter Final (Saturday morning 7/07 at 4am)
If we get passed Japan, our Quarter Final game would be either versus Brazil or Mexico. We've never beaten either of them in a World Cup, but if there is a team that is capable of doing exactly that, it is our current generation of Belgian players!
As per the Japan game, we'll also organise the event at the Castle Hotel in North Melbourne. This time, the game would be played on Saturday morning 7/07 at 4am. Hope to see you all there as this will be a fantastic event with lots of suspense!
No celebrating yellow cards as Belgium well and truly dominated a passive England with our still greatly talented B-Squad! How about that goal by Januzaj! But unfortunately Michy "Bashyoureye" Batshuayi took away his thunder by his unique goal celebration.
It does bring us in a tougher draw, but we know from history that an easier draw is not always a guarantee to go through to the next round (European Championship 2016 vs Wales comes to mind).
So let's stick together and cheer them on through to the next rounds! Japan and Brazil/Mexico await!
What a success, this must have been the biggest Belgium party in Melbourne ever. We were with close to 200 enthusiastic supporters chanting "Waar is da feestje, Hier is da feestje" and "Tous ensemble, tous ensemble, hey hey hey!", fuelled with delicious Belgian beers. The Castle Hotel is such a great place for Belgians in Melbourne. And what a win! The Red Devils really showed their quality and the whole world saw a team that can be very succesful this World Cup. The plan to colour Fed Square red at the World Cup Final day still stands! Thanks everybody for joining and see you again for the upcoming matches! #REDTOGETHER
What a turnout and what a game! Thanks for all the supporters who endured a late night to watch the Belgium football team take home the 3 points! I'm sure there were a few tired eyes the next morning. Remember that the game against Tunisia is tonight (23/06) in the Castle Hotel, with dinner from 6pm onwards and the kick-off for the game at 10pm. Hope to see you there!
Belgian Club Victoria Tipping Competition
To have a bit of fun around the World Cup, the Belgian Club Victoria has set up a predictor competition on the FIFA website. The idea is that you register and predict the scores of every game in the World Cup. Depending on your predictions, you'll score points throughtout the World Cup. With a bit of luck, you may score the most points and can crown yourself "BCV Predictor Champion"!
FIFA has a prize pool for the overall winners of the competition including an Apple MacBook, iPad Pro and other smaller prizes (https://predictor.fifa.com/match/prizes) Note that these prizes are for the overall winner. As part of the "Belgian Club Tipping" Competition, we offer the winner a free meal with a Stella at our next National Day Celebration Event on 21st of July. Details of this event will follow on our website or Facebook.
Ready to shout the Red Devils to the next round together with other Belgians?
Then come and join us at the #REDTOGETHER events in Melbourne, organised by the Belgian Club Victoria. Due to the time difference with Russia, some games are set late during weekdays. Nevertheless, BCV organises a gathering for each game- always open to everyone! Cross the following dates in your agenda:
In 2017, the Belgians in Victoria gathered several times to celebrate their culture. In May we helped our good friend and blacksmith Estebaan during the Blacksmith Festival in Maribyrnong, selling Belgian beers and waffles. The Club received long known Belgian friends as well as newbies during the National Day with a pub Trivia, the Mussels Festival and also Saint Nicholas and his loyal Pete didn't forget visiting Melbourne.
In 2016 the BCV picnic wich was held at Pound Bent on the Yarra in Warrandyte. We all enjoyed the national day, mussels festival and Saint Nicolas celebration. BCV also organised a Easter Egg Hunt at Lysterfield Lake.
The Belgians got some extra opportunities to feel patriotic during the 2016 Soccer European Cup.
After a difficult first game against Italy, the Red Devils made it strongly through to the quarter finals. Despite the hour difference, the Red Devil supporters in Melbourne proudly gathered to see the Belgian national team play.
We were happy to see again this year a satisfactory attendance to the various events, with both new and well known faces. The Erasmus Foundation invited us to the screening of Admiral. The Dutch movie based on the life of the legendary admiral Michiel de Ruyter, partially recorded in Belgium.
Unfortunately this was also the year of the horrible events happening in Brussels on the 22nd of March. During the vigil held on Fed Square here in Melbourne, followed the next day by a Mass in St Pauls Cathedral.
We were very thankfull of the support of our and the Australian community here. Definately in times like these, when it's a hard reality not to be close to our family and friends.
