Biometric Passports23 June 2011.
Dear Madam, dear Sir, Like most EU countries, Belgium starts issuing a new generation of biometric passports that will include a digital photograph and fingerprints. These passports are more secure, less prone to falsification and facilitate travel to many countries. We expect to start issuing this new type of passports in our jurisdiction (Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific Islands) in the second half of this year. This will imply the necessity for passport applicants to appear in person at any Belgian Embassy worldwide or at the provincial authorities in Belgium. Please find below a brochure (in English, French, Dutch and German) relating to the issuance of Biometric passports, which will take effect in the near future, probably early 2012. From that time onwards, all Belgians will have to come, once every five years, in person to our Embassy in Canberra, to any other embassy or carrier consulate around the world, or in Belgium (provincial authorities), to have the biometric data taken (fingerprints, digital picture and signature).
However, up until the time a personal appearance is compulsory, we can advise that the new (fully biometric) and the current procedure (sending passport applications by mail) are both possible for any passport renewal.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could make this information available to as many Belgians as possible.
